I’m Deborah Kan from the Wall Street Journal digital network. Joining me now is Drew Faust, the President of Harvard. Good to see you.

-          How many students going to Harvard are coming from Asia? Where are they coming from and are their numbers increasing?
-          The numbers are increasing and now the students from China represent the largest non-US source of students, so this is an area of tremendous draw for us. We want to expand those numbers and have the very best students think about us and come to join us.

-          Last year, how many students from China came to Harvard?
-          A little more than 650 students from China.

-          How was that different from previous series?
-          It has grown dramatically in the last 6 to 8 years. It is a steady increase.

-          There’s a lot debate about the western vs eastern style of education, eastern being more restricted, western being more liberal arts oriented and open to questioning. How does Harvard bridge that gap, because students are coming from an entirely different education system?
-          We look at the whole student and make sure the student is academically excellent. We want to see measurement of that. But we are not interested inclusively in test scores and grades, we want to see what this student has done outside the academic sphere, does this student have a broad range of interests, what contribution in what areas this student might make to the community at Harvard. We are also interested in characters, what can we find out about who this person is and what this person’s standards for him or herself are and that would mean with him the community as well. So that is something we want to find evidence of, this is a very important aspect in the qualification of the students who want admission into Harvard.

-          As the world becomes more global and competitive, how is the applicant changing and what are you looking for today versus 10 years ago?
-          The applicants are more global. There are more people from around the world thinking about Harvard. We also have changed our financial aid policy to expand our support to lower income students. So we are looking more broadly at students from economic backgrounds that may not thought of Harvard. We have a long time a need blind admission policy but often weren’t aware of this. So now we are trying to be more determined about our desire for students from diverse economic back ground. That is an important aspect on broadening the range of our students in term of their economic circumstances.

-          How important are test scores? Can you get into Harvard without a 4.0 or above GPA?
-          Yes, you can. We try to look at the academic qualifications of student in a variety of ways. Test scores tell us something but certainly not everything. How have students done is the school also tell us something, but again not everything. We look at students’ evaluation from faculty members. We look at the widest range of attributes that might identify their academic qualifications including interviews for almost all of our applicants with alumnus and others to assess their personal qualifications as well as intellectual ones.
